Vikings: Design a T-Shirt & Explanation Text
Children will look at different symbols significant to the Vikings and will design a tshirt including the symbols. They will then write an explanation text that describes the different symbols included, as well as the reasons for the design choices.
In the past, this unit has worked really well at the end of a Viking study, where the children can show off what they’ve learned.
This pack includes lesson plans, rubrics, and editable rubrics to support with the learning process. Lessons and objectives are aligned with objectives from the 2014 National Curriculum of England.

Working Scientifically with Cookies for Years 3 & 4 **UPDATED
This resource has been designed to use as a way to teach the Working Scientifically objectives apart from the core science objectives.
In the past, I have used the lessons with the class as a way to reinforce the concept of a fair test, as well as different types of variables.
Baking gives the children the opportunity to go deeper into concepts, combining them with design, Maths, and core science. I have included recipes at the start of the pack to do with the class initially and expose them to different macarons. Alternatively, different types can be purchased ahead of time and shared with the class that way.

Children will investigate jewelry design from around the world before designing their own.
In the past, I have used the finished jewelry to sell for our school’s art show.

Vikings: Battle Modifications with littleBits
Children will look at the history of Viking warfare and weapons during their invasion of the UK. Children will then design their own defence or weapon modification with littleBits based on a Viking design.
In the past, I have introduced this lesson dressed as a Monk at Lindisfarne with the light off and candles lit. I play audio in the background of Monks singing before acting frightened at the arrival of Vikings coming ashore.

Halloween STEAM: Create a Monster Catcher
Students will evaluate different myths about monsters as well as different trapping devices before designing their own. In the past, I have given students access to littleBits prototyping boards for this STEAM project, but they’re not required.
Resources for researching different monsters and traps are provided.
This unit follows the 2014 National Curriculum of England’s Design Technology objectives.

The Outsiders Persuasive Writing: Product Re-branding
This resource is meant to be used alongside a novel study on The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton.
Students choose (or are assigned) a product that they must rebrand for either the Greasers or the Socs. They’ll consider questions about what would make a product more appealing to one group over another? What colors and logos would make it appealing?
Students create a persuasive advertisement for the Greasers or the Socs.

Hidden Worlds: Portal Keys with Circuit Stickers STEM
After writing a narrative about using a portal key to travel to a hidden world, children design the scene they’ve written about and then design a circuit with conductive tape and LEDs to make the portal key’s location interactive with the audience.
The pack includes different graphic organizers, resources for lower ability pupils, as well as lesson plans and rubrics.
All learning outcomes are aligned with the 2014 National Curriculum of England, and connections to the CCSS are noted, where appropriate.

Mayan Civilisation Study - Art & DT Focus (Textiles)

Children will investigate different Mayan textiles, including colours used; what is shown; and what the textiles were used for. They will learn different stitches used for decoration and attaching materials before designing their own (using annotated, cross-sectional and exploded diagrams) before making and evaluating their textiles.
In the past, I have focused on either a whole-class tapestry or have focused on worry dolls and/or worry doll bags, depending on how much time we have.

Create a Survival Invention STEAM
This resource has been designed to be done alongside Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo, but can also be done independently of the novel study.
Children will design survival inventions to withstand the environment of a remote island after a shipwreck. They will investigate different weather patterns in a specified area of the world before deciding on what they will need to survive.
Children will be encouraged to use different diagrams (annotated, cross-sectional and exploded) to show their ideas before making and evaluating them.
Resources are structured around the Key Stage 2 expectations of the 2014 National Curriculum of England with Maths links for Upper Key Stage 2.
The pack includes differentiated sheets should they be used in lower Key Stage 2 or for children less able in reading and writing.

Mission to Mars: Design a Mars Rover with littleBits
Updated with new graphics and Google extension
This 35-page resource has been designed to use as a guide to designing a Mars Rover with littleBits. Children will first look at previous Mars Rovers and their jobs before designing, making, and evaluating their own Rovers.
This Outcome will allow children to use the Design - Make - Evaluate - Technical Knowledge threads of the 2014 National Curriculum of England’s Design & Technology document.
littleBits don’t have to exclusively be used for the Outcome - Lego Robotics (WeDo) and simple circuit kits can also be used. Teachers are encouraged to also have thin card, sugar paper and adhesives available to create the rovers with the circuits inside.

Design A Video Game on Scratch
Children will begin by playing different video games online to evaluate what makes them fun and engaging for their audience. They will then analyse the mechanics of the games and then plan a game of their own remixing a game on Scratch based on their criteria. Children will then use conditionals, operators, and variables on Scratch to make their own game.
Lesson plans, editable rubrics, and classroom examples from Year 6 are provided, as well as links to additional support on the Scratch website.

Survival Invention Explanation Text
This resource has been designed to be done alongside Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo, but can also be done independently of the novel study.

Ancient Benin Study: Design the Head of an Oba
This resource is meant to be used by children in Key Stage 2 (English objectives pitched to Years 5 and 6) to investigate the history and significance of the commemorative heads made to honour the Oba of Ancient Benin.
Children will first read about the heads through differentiated articles, then investigate the symbolism of different commemorative heads. They will then design their own commemorative head before carving it out of a bar of soap and evaluating their design.
Lastly, children will write an explanation text about their commemorative head.

Ancient Benin Study: Create a Thumb Piano
This resource is meant to be used by children in Key Stage 2 (English objectives pitched to Years 5 and 6) to investigate instruments used by traditional societies in West Africa. After listening to music and investigating different instruments used and how they are designed and used, children will design their own thumb piano (mbira) before making it and evaluating it.
Alternatively, after researching different instruments from West Africa, children can choose to make a different one instead of a thumb piano. The design, make, and evaluate sheets have been made as generic as possible to allow for this.
